What Are Split Ends?
Each strand of hair has two to three layers, with the cells of the outermost layer—called the cuticle—layered over one another like shingles on a roof to protect the inner layers, which are made of keratin, the same protein that’s in our fingernails. Only thick hair has the innermost layer, called the medulla, but every strand has a layer called the cortex. Split ends are what happen when the cells of the cuticle wear away and the coils of keratin in the cortex come apart. Protect your hair from heat.

Letting your hair air dry more often and working with your hair’s natural texture rather than fighting it with straighteners or hot rollers and curling irons will help prevent hair breakage and splitting. If you must blow dry, straighten, or curl your hair, use a lower heat setting and apply a heat protection spray or serum before styling to give your hair an extra shot of moisture and coat the hair shaft with additional line of defense against the heat.

You can apply plain mashed avocado to your hair, but most recipes call for stirring in an egg and a splash of olive oil before spreading it thoroughly over your hair from root to tip. Leave the mask on for at least 30 minutes to allow it to penetrate the hair before washing it as usual.
Finally, a use for light beer: pour it over your head in the shower.
Why a beer rinse makes hair seem thicker and shinier hasn’t been extensively studied, but most theories credit the proteins and sugars in beer with bonding to the hair shaft, thereby strengthening and smoothing the cuticle. Because the hops in beer has an astringent quality, beer can also help to rinse away product residues from your hair and scalp.
